Since 2001, Jan Veldhuis has been working as an independent air transport consultant with Amsterdam Aviation Economics (AAE). After he graduated in econometrics from Tilburg University in 1975, Jan Veldhuis joined the Netherlands Institute of Transport, currently named NEA. In 1979 he joined the Dutch Central Planning Bureau (CPB), where he was involved in analyses on the relation between the Dutch national system of education and the labour market. In a later stage he was head of the CPB Transport Department, responsible for the economic forecasting of the transport sector in the Netherlands.
In 1986 he joined Schiphol Airport, where he was involved in market analysis and forecasting and its implications for the longer-term master plan of the airport. He represented Schiphol in the ACI Europe forecasting working group of airports.
From 1990 to 2001 he was employed as a senior policy advisor at the Dutch Civil Aviation Authority. In that period Jan Veldhuis was responsible for the economic research program of the Civil Aviation Authority. He has participated in many project teams, for example one dealing with the preparation of the new runway at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol which will be operational in 2003, and another one for the options for redesigning the airport after 2010. He has led a long-term scenario task force, in which the main Dutch stakeholders were involved. He participated in several international working groups, for example for ECAC, Eurocontrol and ICAO.
Since 1995 he has been involved in various consultancy activities and training courses in aviation. In 1997 he joined a team of consultants to study the feasibility of a new cargo airport near St. Petersburg, Russia. He has developed an ‘Airport Connectivity Model’ (Netscan), which addresses the air network performance of airline alliances and airports. Summaries of these performance indicators are published in the regular IATA Global Airport Connectivity Monitor.
