Bas ter Weel

Bas ter Weel is director of SEO Amsterdam Economics. He is also professor of economics at the University of Amsterdam. He has over 20 years of experience as a scientist, policy researcher, supervisor, and advisor. His research expertise is in the fields of the labor market, public finances, social security, pensions, healthcare, and education.

Bas leads complex research projects for the Dutch government, the European Commission, international organizations, regulators, and the business community. In addition, he has extensive experience in providing education, training and courses for policymakers and students and he is a frequent speaker at conferences and seminars in the Netherlands and abroad.

Bas studied economics at Maastricht University (1993-1998) and obtained his PhD at the same university in 2002. He then worked as an assistant professor for several years before transferring to the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM). Bas has worked at the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis (CPB) since the end of 2007 and as its deputy director since 2013. In the period from 2007 until his appointment at SEO, he worked part-time at Maastricht University. First as a senior researcher and from 2011 as a professor of economics.

In addition to his work at SEO, he holds several additional positions. For example, he is a crown member of the Social Economic Council of the Netherlands, supervisor at an organization for primary education, board member of the Royal Netherlands Economic Association and co-editor of De Economist. He is also a research fellow at the Tinbergen Institute (Amsterdam), IZA (Bonn), ROA (Maastricht) and SKOPE (Oxford).
