Suzanne Buskens-Ruwaard

Suzanne Buskens is a researcher at the Health & Social Policy unit. She combines her background in (health)economics with her work experience as a quality advisor at Princess Máxima Center for pediatric oncology and policy advisor at Zorgverzekeraars Nederland (ZN), the umbrella organization of health insurers in the Netherlands.

Suzanne has an educational background in (health)economics, including two master’s degrees and a PhD. In her doctoral thesis she investigated the purchasing of medical specialist care and behavioral healthcare in the Netherlands. She conducted her research at the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) and the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis (CPB). In addition, she investigated what the Netherlands can learn from experiences with purchasing healthcare in Massachusetts, United States. She partially conducted this research at Harvard Medical School (HMS) in Boston, United States.

After obtaining her PhD, she worked 4,5 years as a quality advisor at Prinses Máxima Center for pediatric oncology. Suzanne was responsible for developing quality indicators for internal as well as external use (reporting to the Health and Youth Care Inspectorate (IGJ)). In addition, she was Care Evaluation and Appropriate Use (ZE&GG) coordinator and audit coordinator. Suzanne also worked as a policy advisor for Zorgverzekeraars Nederland (ZN), the umbrella organization of health insurers in the Netherlands. As a policy advisor she focused on medical specialist care and quality of care.

Suzanne obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degree in ‘Economics and Business: Industrial Organisation’ from the University of Amsterdam (UvA), and her master’s degree in ‘Health Economics’ from Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR). She earned her PhD from Tilburg University (TiU).
