Michiel Bijlsma

Michiel Bijlsma is head of the unit Financial Markets and Finance at SEO Amsterdam Economics. Michiel has more than 20 years of experience doing applied economic research in the area of financial markets, regulation and oversight, consumer behaviour and innovation. He has extensive experience with project leadership and combines scientific analysis with a focus on practical relevance for his clients. He is familiar with a broad range of qualitative and quantitative methods and techniques.

Before his current position at SEO, he worked on a range of financial sector topics from different perspectives. From 2019-2020 Michiel was head of Payment Policy at the Dutch Central Bank (DNB), working on topics including consumer behaviour and preferences, the rise of fintech and bigtech in payment markets, the implementation of PSD2, open banking and Central Bank Digital Currency. From 2006-2018 he worked at the Netherland Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis (CPB), as head of competition and regulation department (2013-2018), head of the financial markets program (2008-2013), and senior researcher (2006-2008). He worked on policy issues in the wake of the financial crisis and was responsible for CPB’s annual financial risk stability report. In addition, he worked on topics such as the governance of public and semi-public institutions, competition and efficiency in healthcare, as well as innovation policy. From 2003-2006 he worked at the Dutch Competition Authority (ACM), as senior policy officer and interim head of the financial markets monitor, studying developments in financial markets, energy markets and health care markets from a competition policy perspective. Between 2000 and 2002 he worked as a consultant at Ernst and Young Treasury and financial risk management, where he mainly worked on risk models and valuation of complex derivatives.

Michiel studied theoretical physics at the university of Utrecht from 1991-1996 and afterwards completed a PhD in theoretical physics on a topic from quantum statistics: Bose-Einstein condensation.

Michiel publishes regularly in popular journals and scientific journal on the topics of financial markets, competition and innovation. He published amongst others in leading economic journals such as the Rand journal of economics and the Journal of Public Economics.

In addition to his work for SEO, Michiel is extramural fellow at the Tilburg Law and Economics Center (Tilec), which is part of Tilburg University. Michiel is also the chairman of the microdata user counsel at the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).
